Ford Tourneo Custom Concept previews new European people mover

Ford News By AutoBlog - Tue, 02/21/2012 - 18:01

Let's clear the air. This is not - we repeat, not - the Ford E-Series-replacing Transit that will be built and sold in the United States next year. According to our contacts at Ford, this Tourneo Custom Concept previews what the next generation of front-wheel-drive, passenger-friendly Transits will look like when they go on sale in Europe and other world markets. The North American-spec van will be based off of the heavy-duty, rear-wheel-drive Transit that's set to debut later this year.

So, let's talk Tourneo. This eight-passenger van is essentially Ford's answer to vehicles like the Renault Trafic or Volkswagen Caravelle - more butch than a minivan, with a higher ride height and more interior space. Ford says that the Tourneo Concept boasts a rich, comfortable, leather-trimmed interior with seats that can be rearranged into a number of different configurations.

Ford has only released this one image as of now, but it's clear that the automaker's Kinetic design has found a home on even its largest vehicles. Up front is the Blue Oval's signature trapezoidal grille, and strong profile lines on the sides swoop upward toward the rear in an effort to make this barn-on-wheels look as fluid and sleek as possible. Under the hood, a range of 2.2-liter turbo-diesel powertrains are available, in 98-, 123- and 153-horsepower variants, all of which are mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

We'll see the Tourneo in person in just a few weeks at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. As for the U.S.-spec Transit, it'll be a while before that officially breaks cover. Hit the jump for all of the juicy Tourneo Concept details in Ford's press release.

Captain's Log: the threat is real

Latest Forum Posts - Tue, 02/21/2012 - 10:42
Something ground-breaking is about to happen to me. I swore for years that it would never happen, that I'd resist and outlast the threat.

I'm wrong. I'm dead wrong.

I'm buying a pickup truck. The scourge of the roads up here. The defining moment when you admit "I care less about fuel efficiency than I do about off-road capability". It's only a matter of time until I grow my hair out, with a mustache, take up drinking beer again and fall in love with NASCAR.

Well, f**k that last one. WRC for life!

I'm thankfully not straying away from my own dilemma of swearing that I'd never own a new vehicle (unless it's boosted from the factory) ever again. So, I'm buying my buddy's (who happens to be my mechanic) 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 - long box, ext cab, 360CID.

Reasons for doing so:

1 - f**k car/truck/SUV payments. My Escape's been good to me but I'm tired of paying for it and almost never driving it. So, it's leaving in the near future.

2 - off-roading. I MISS IT SO MUCH. Most of you don't know this, but I was fairly "into" off-roading for the first few years that I lived up here. I'll have a big bastard to drive, but that's ok... it already has a purpose with my circle of friends.

3 - 5th wheeling. My 22' Golden Falcon is only 4,000lbs but it's a 5th wheel. My campground is getting kind of silly with their rules and after this summer, I might just sell the trailer/add-a-room there and get something else or pull everything out... literally. Might also buy some property up here to suit that need as well. The truck was used sparingly beforehand to 5th wheel, and it's wired appropriately, so I'm good. Just need a new 5th wheel hitch when the time comes.

4 - winter beater. I drove the Focus basically all winter because I've lost all love for driving the Escape. It gets moved around some (even went for a rip last night with Oscar) but as competent as it is... I'm bored with it. It tows well, handles snow/ice/dirt well, hauls the dog well... but it doesn't stand out anywhere. So, it's not for me. I've driven it and maintained it faithfully but I just want something that will do EXACTLY what I want. Can't do that with the Escape.

So... I'll get a truck that I know the entire history on (in my buddy's family since brand new, no wrecks, bud's been doing all mechanical on it in recent years, full engine and trans rebuild already, mechanically sound), have a competent mechanic to work on it when I can't and much less monthly overhead. Win-win.

Personally, I blame Oscar for that Carhartt winter coat I got off him. I've been itching to do "more" with a truck ever since. Thanks bud, I needed that.

Also, getting a custom push bar made for it with a winch mount. I'll be the new recovery vehicle for our buds with Jeeps - including Oscar, lol.

people these days...

Been awhile since iv posted anything, and it sucks that its going to be bad news, but c'est la vie...I woke up this morning, walked into the garage only to find a long and deep key scratch on my driver side door! Right down to the GD primer. I figured it must have happened the night b4 while I was at a buddies house, and didnt notice it because it was dark out. Does anybody know of a good shop that can shoot Sonic Blue pearl and make it match the rest of the car? I want to sell it come spring time and would rather not have this knock off more from the price then I already have

GT500-crashing kid to get Tosh.0 web redemption [w/video]

Ford News By AutoBlog - Mon, 02/20/2012 - 15:01

Seasons may change, time may pass, but the internet never forgets. It's been six years since then-14-year-old Joey drove his father's brand-new Ford Shelby GT500 through the back wall of the family's garage. Video of the event and the ensuing carnage has racked up an astonishing 3.6 million views on YouTube on one account alone, and the clip remains a perennial classic. Now it looks like Joey is finally ready for a little redemption courtesy of the good people at Tosh.0. The show routinely features people who are internet stars for all the wrong reasons in the "web redemption" segment.

Daniel Tosh, the show's host, allows those maligned by the power of the internet one more shot at infamy while reenacting the event that made them infamous to begin with. Joey will explain his side of the GT500 calamity on the newest episode of Tosh.0 airing on February 21. Click past the jump to see the crash one more time. Trust us, it never gets old.

Hi

I'm a new Focus owner; here's my question:
I have a 2005 ST and as I drive mainly highway I find the washers spray too low on the windshield. Can they be aimed higher, or are there revised parts available? A quick look didn't reveal anything obvious.

Looking for a Full Wave Bridge Rectifier

Where in Toronto/Scarborough can I walk into a store and buy a 25A/50V Full Wave Bridge Rectifier? I need 2 of these units for my charging system on my Bike. Aparently Radio Shack stocks these in all stores in the USA. Where up here can I walk into a store and buy one? I'm not planning on going to Active Surplus on Queen St for 2 $5 parts. So any other options would be great.

Thanks

J.D. Power reports vehicle dependability has substantially improved

Remember the days of planned obsolescence? They're over. The latest J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study shows a 13-percent improvement in new car dependability over the first three years of ownership. The latest sample of 2009 model year vehicles shows the lowest rate of problems since the study's inception in 1990.

The big winner was the Lexus LS, which had the fewest reported problems in the study. Lexus was the highest rated brand as well, followed by Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion. J.D. Power says 25 of 32 automotive brands showed improved dependability, with six declining and one remaining the same.

While J.D. Power was pleased to see automakers producing high quality cars despite the economic disaster unfolding around them three years ago, it did note that some brands are still not getting credit for building reliable vehicles. "During the past four years, models from Buick, Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai and Lincoln have achieved consistently strong levels of dependability," the company's release stated, "but still have relatively high proportions of new-vehicle buyers expressing reliability concerns."

2015 Ford Focus RS to get five doors, turbo four and active noise cancellation

Ford News By AutoBlog - Wed, 02/15/2012 - 18:30

Engines keep getting smaller, but that doesn't mean they're getting weaker. Case in point: Ford, which is developing a new 2.3-liter four with turbocharging and direct injection. It's rumored to go into the Mustang in a couple of years, but sources from across the pond (read: Hot Hatch country) expect it to power the next Focus RS.

The engine would crank out at least 320 horsepower, and replace the 2.5-liter inline-five that Ford borrowed from Volvo (from which it has since divested) for the previous Focus RS. If you're worried that a turbo four would lack the roar of the previous five, Ford is reportedly preparing to equip the new Focus RS with active noise cancellation and pipe in sound to replace it.

Ford is reportedly ruling out the all-wheel drive you'd expect from other hot hatches like the Subaru WRX or Volkswagen Golf R, due to high weight and cost, in favor of the RevoKnuckle torque-steer compensation system found in the previous Focus RS, and similar to the systems used in the Renaultsport Megane and Vauxhall Astra VXR.

Since the new Focus has yet to appear in any form other than four-door sedan, five-door wagon or five-door hatch, Top Gear expects the new Focus RS to pack five doors where the previous model had three.

Ford's clever Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ad features phantom model

Ford News By AutoBlog - Wed, 02/15/2012 - 14:58

Capitalizing on the allure of attractive models for automotive advertising is anything but a recent phenomenon. Inventing a supermodel, on the other hand, is one of the more inspired tactics we've stumbled across in recent memory.

According to the marketing gurus at Adweek, Ford has placed a full-page advertisement in the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition that includes a beautiful blue Mustang posing alongside what appears to be an equally beautiful and scantily clad model named Dalena Henriques. A quick Google search on her name, not surprisingly, brings up dalenahenriques.com as the top result.

Here's where things get a bit tricky. It seems Dalena Henriques may not be a real person at all. A visit to her website shows the stunning brunette in pose after pose with the 2013 Mustang, and her face is never fully in the frame. The Mustang, though, is front and center in every single image. Clever, Ford. Very clever.
